International Parliament for Cooperation, Safety and Peace
Award Ceremony of the World Organization of the States
Rome, June 13, 2019

Address by Dr Mustafa Cerić
Grand Mufti Emeritus of Bosnia 2019

H.E. Eugenio Lai,
President of World Organization of the States,
Eminences and Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have already received some awards, but this award is a special one to me because I thought when you are released from an official duty of religious affairs people forget you and don't recognize your work for religion anymore.

Thus, the news of this prestigious award was really a big surprise for me. So, thank you for reminding me that I am still alive here.

Thank you that you didn't forget me because it is easer to be punished than to be forgotten, and it is easer to be adjured than to be neglected.

Thank you for inviting me to join you in your noble idea of the International Parliament for Cooperation, Safety and Peace.

Mr. President Eugenio Lai,
Eminences and Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Our humanity is at risk today not only from a natural mud and the flood of a Biblical proportion, but also from an artificial human madness and folly of a Neroic inflammatory political inanity. It seems to me that today's politicians recall only the first part of Machiavelli’s advice to the prince when he said: “a prince, who wishes to maintain himself, [must] learn how not to be good” (Ch. XV), but Machiavelli continued his advice that “a prince should make himself feared in such a way that if he does not gain love, he at any rate avoids hatred: for fear and the absence of hatred may well go together” (Ch. XVII), as well as that a “prince must…avoid those things which will make him hated or despised” (Ch. XIX).

Sad to say, but the men of power today, almost all around the world, do things exactly, which make them "hated" or "despised". It seems they don't care about it as long as they have the power to disperse the discontents. It looks like we are still in the shadow of Erasmus' (c. 146-1536) "Praise the Folly" because there are fewer and fewer people who are capable to listen to each other rationally.

They, it appears, like to compete in their rhetorical and political foolishness that makes us peaceful men anxious of the notion that we are or as if we are in the state of an undeclared third world war. I heard this alarming warning from His Holiness pope Francis who, for sure, knows the state of the soul, and the spirit, and the mind and the heart of the world more than any one else.

Propitiously, the meek doesn't give up and the aggressive doesn’t win. For, neither the meek nor the aggressive will inherit the earth but cooperative. Thus, the only way out of this thereat is the cooperation for truth, justice, reconciliation and peace for all.

Mr. President Eugenio Lai,
Eminences and Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

And the cooperation for truth, justice, reconciliation and peace for all means that all humanity must enjoy safety, safety which is not a monopoly of any one, but a natural, God given, commodity of all human beings. We have learnt by now, haven’t we that either all men and women will be safe in this world or none will be safe. Indeed, all men and women are entitled to have the right to live, to have the right to faith, to have the right to freedom, to have the right to property and to have the right to dignity. That is the task of this International Parliament for Cooperation, Safety and Peace, as I understand it, to make sure that safety for all humanity is guaranteed. As a survivor of Genocide in Bosnia at the end of the last century and after the failure of the cry "Never Again" in the aftermath of the Holocaust, I know what it means to be safe in the home, in the homeland and in the state. So, thank you for inviting me and honoring me to be one of you in this journey for the safety of our children and grandchildren in Europe and all around the world. So, may God help us!

Mr. President Eugenio Lai,
Eminences and Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Peace today is air for us to breathe. Peace is water for us to drink. Peace is bread for us to eat and to live. We can live without bread for a quite while, we can survive without water for a short while, but we cannot survive without air but for few seconds only. It is here that we have to understand that the just and permanent peace is like the clean and permanent air, without it we cannot survive, no one can survive. But all of us will live happily if we all cooperate for the sake of clean air and just peace based on truth, justice and reconciliation, if we all work for safety in trust and dignity, and if we all work for just and permanent peace with sincerity and truthfulness with each other,

I am proud to be part of a great initiative of Peace Forum of the Great Sheikh Abdullah Bin Bayyah in Abu Dhabi, who leads the way toward a meaningful cooperation, safety and peace as this respectable World Organization of the States is designated to be. It is designated to be a visible beacon for a blind, a right guide for a perplexed and a strong hand for an oppressed. I am honored and proud to be recognized today by you as I commit myself to be one of you in sickness and in health, until death do us part.

This award I dedicate to my country Bosnia with a prayer to Almighty God for its meaningful cooperation for the sake of truth, justice, reconciliation and peace, for its needed and desired safety and for its just and permanent peace of soul, spirit, mind and heart.

We pray to Thee, Almighty God
May grief become hope!
May revenge become justice!
May mothers’ tears become prayer,
That Srebrenica never happen again,
To no one and nowhere!

Our God Do not let success deceive us
Nor failure takes us to despair!

Always remind us that failure is a temptation
That precedes success!

Our God Teach us that tolerance is the highest degree of power
And the desire for revenge the first sign of weakness!

Our God If you deprive us of our property, Give us hope!
If you grant us with success,
Give us also the will to overcome defeat!

If you take from us the blessing of health,
Provide us with the blessing of faith!

Our God,
If we sin against people,
Give us the strength of apology!

And if people sin against us,
Give us the strength of forgiveness!

Our God,
If we forget Thee,
Do not forget us! Amen!

Thank you and God bless you!
