SHOULDN'T WE WORRY ABOUT MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT ISLAM?

Mustafa CERIC, Grand Mufti Emeritus of Bosnia: Would the world hear about Capt Humayun Khan if it not were for Donald Trump's bigotry against Islam and Muslims in America? No, the world wouldn't know about his father Khizr Khan either. Indeed, thanks to Donald Trump the whole world now know who is Capt Humayun Khan's mother Ghazala Khan. This was th Donald Trump's self-deafening day, which he could not avoid as Abraha Al-Ashram couldn't avoid his.

No, we shouldn't worry about deliberate misconceptions about Islam today. First, these misconceptions are not new; second, they are as false today as they have been all the time; third, they are empty of any substance; fourth, they are challenging for us to think who we really are as Muslims; fifth, these misconceptions are self-defeating of their owners.

So, let me say this. If Islam is a true faith of God, and I believe it is, no one can falsify it. So, I worry not about the fate of Islam as such. Indeed, if Islam is the final Covenant between God and man, and I believe it is, we shouldn't worry about its final end. The God's print of the Covenant cannot be deleted, and the man's signature of it cannot be denied.

Hence, we shouldn't worry about the value, the owner of which is fully taking care of it. Abdul-Muttalib bin Hashim, the grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, had no dilemma whether to defend the Ka'ba at Mecca from the Abyssinian Abraha's attack or seek from him his camels back. Indeed, Abdul-Muttalib was not hesitant in asking his two hundred camels back from Abraha Al-Ashram, the vicegerent of the Abyssinian king Negus in the Yemen.

When Abraha heard that Abdul-Muttalib was more concerned about his two hundred camels than the Holly Shrine of Ka'ba, he was disappointed in him. "You pleased me much when I saw you; then I was displeased when I heard what you said. Do you wish to talk to me about two hundred camels of yours, which I have taken, and say nothing about your religion and the religion of your forefathers which I have come to destroy?" Abdul-Muttalib replied: "I am owner of the camels and the temple has an owner who will defend it". Abraha warned Abdul-Muttalib that the owner of the Ka'ba will not be able to defend it against his force of elephants. Abdul- Muttalib said: "That remains to be seen. But now, give me back my camels".

Abdul-Muttalib got back his camels while Abraha didn’t reach the Ka'ba. Abraha's elephant, called Mahmoud, kneeled and refused to enter Mecca where the Ka'ba stood as an obstacle for the glory of Abraha's new shrine he had built in the Yemen. - Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the owners of the Elephant? Did He not make their plot go astray? And He sent against them birds, in flocks. Striking them with stones of baked clay. And He made them like stalks. (Qur'an, 105:1-5).

This is a story about every self-defeating aggressor against the value owned by the One whose ownership cannot be deleted or denied. The ownership of Islam is in Almighty God today as it was the Ka'ba in the time of Abdul-Muttalib. The lesson is clear. You should take care of what you own at your home and in your land. God is taking care of his religion. God is ensuring the proper state of Islam in the world with or without us Muslims. We Muslims own not Islam. On the contrary, Islam owns us as much as we own ourselves at home and in land, where we are supposed to take care of our "camels". This is symbolic saying, but crucial for an understanding about our Muslim state in the world today. The internecine war is destroying in us the sense of what is at stake. We have difficulty to determine what our priorities are? Sure, we should know that rather sooner than later. We can be sure that they cannot take our faith, but they are taking our "camels" every day. What you should worry about, then? Is it about your faith or about your "camels"? Think about it. And don't forget the Abdul-Muttalib's lesson, which Ibn Ishak has related to us to be a guidance in our troubled times.

We should know that from the day one Islam was attacked with misconceptions by those who could not afford to hear and see the truth coming out as clear as the light of the heavens and the earth.

Falsehood is as ugly as anything you can imagine. However, the falsehood is sharpening the truth in the pure soul of decent men who are not blind to see the light of the heavens and the earth.

Those who cannot receive the light of the heavens and the earth are empty in the darkness of their soul and their mind. Emptiness can produce only emptiness as darkness can liken only darkness.

Would the world hear about Capt Humayun Khan if it not were for Donald Trump's bigotry against Islam and Muslims in America? No, the world wouldn't know about his father Khizr Khan either. Indeed, thanks to Donald Trump the whole world now know who is Capt Humayun Khan's mother Ghazala Khan. This was th Donald Trump's self-deafening day, which he could not avoid as Abraha Al-Ashram couldn't avoid his. This is how a challenge becomes a success in deafening the wrong. The Muslims should be aware of this opportunity to cope with today's difficulty about the misconceptions about their faith and culture.

It is when they intend to humiliate you that you should rise up above their bigotry and give them a defeat in their face. This is how the misconceptions about Islam become self-defeating of their owners. And this is why I have no worry about Islam, but I have the worry about "the camels".

Folks, we should take care of our "camels"!
