TUZLA: 25. MAY - REMEMBERING SADDEST DAY
A commemoration in Tuzla marked 17 years since a grenade fired from territory under the control of the Army of Republika Srpska on Mount Ozren killed 71 young people, and injured 120.
The past 17 years have not eased the sorrow and emptiness to Edin Huris, one of the injured men, and Semsudin Alagic, father of a killed 17 year old.
Alagic said he has a lot of problems living through May each year. He had once hoped that time would make the pain easier, but he had found that each passing year has been more difficult.
“May 25 is not marked for us, who were injured or those who lost loved ones in the Kapija. This is a day for citizens of Tuzla, a day which will live in the memory of this city”, said Huric.
The former Day of Youth for Tuzla and its residents will forever remain a remembrance day for the killed youth and be remembered as the saddest day. Many Tuzla citizens, as well as delegations of government representatives, organizations and religious communities, laid flowers and paid their respect to those killed.
The average age of the people killed was 23 years, and the youngest victim was only three years old.
For this crime, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina sentenced Novak Djukic, a major of the Army of Republika Srpska to 25 years in prison.
Considering the large number of those killed, according to Huric, other perpatrators should have been prosecuted for the crime in Tuzla.
