BOSNIAN television showed fresh footage today of top war crimes fugitive Ratko Mladic apparently enjoying himself in family outings, including to a ski resort possibly last winter.
The images, which have been posted on the Internet video-sharing site YouTube, were first broadcast on Sarajevo-based FTV television.
Mladic appears slimmer and older than previous sightings, but not significantly different, as was the case for his ex-political leader Radovan Karadzic, arrested in Belgrade last year disguised as an alternative healer.
Mladic, 67, has been on the run from the UN’s International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for 14 years, when he was indicted for genocide for allegedly orchestrating the 1995 Srebrenica massacre.
Like fellow accused Karadzic, now being tried before the ICTY, Mladic is widely thought to be hiding in Serbia, where some still consider him a hero of Bosnia’s 1992-1995 war.
The FTV television network said it had more than one hour of footage of Mladic in Bosnia and Serbia, the newest at the unidentified ski resort filmed “very recently, perhaps even last winter”.
In Belgrade, Rasim Ljajic, Serbia’s minister in charge of co-operation with the UN tribunal, told a hastily arranged media conference the footage was old and had already been handed over to the ICTY.
“It was seized in a search of Mladic’s house in December 2008 and handed over to the ICTY in March,” Mr Ljajic said.
“The last known footage was taken eight years ago. The last time Mladic was in military premises was at the Krcmari army barracks near (the eastern Serbian town of) Valjevo on June 1, 2002.”
The previously unseen images show Mladic in various restaurants and apartments and at what appears to be military barracks in Serbia, almost always accompanied by his wife Bosa and son Darko.
On Tuesday, an ex-bodyguard of Mladic gave a Belgrade court details about the wartime Bosnian Serb army chief’s last known movements before he went underground, including shelter at Belgrade’s Topcider military barracks.
In one set of images, Mladic is seen dancing at his son’s wedding and in two others holding what would appear to be two newborn babies whom he is addressing as his grandchildren.
Two recordings are accompanied by dates, one involving a military meeting in March 1997 and the other a wedding near the Bosnian capital Sarajevo in 2000.
The last images, which appear to have been filmed by his son, apparently show Mladic with his wife and daughter-in-law at the winter resort.
